Why it is called the President
Two things carry the name. The bracelet, with its semi-circular three-piece links, is called the President bracelet and was introduced alongside the model in 1956. And the watch became associated with heads of state through the twentieth century, which is where the shorthand took hold.
Rolex uses President as the bracelet designation. Collectors use it for the whole watch. Both are in common use, and enquiries arrive under either.

What to check on a Day-Date
Gold shows wear more readily than steel and polishes away faster, so case sharpness is the first thing to assess and the hardest to recover. The President bracelet stretches over time and the links cannot be tightened, only replaced. On diamond-set examples, confirm whether the stones are factory-set by Rolex or added afterwards, because aftermarket setting moves the value substantially and not upward.

What is a Rolex President?

Is the Day-Date available in steel?
No. Rolex has never produced the Day-Date in steel. Any watch presented as a steel Day-Date is either a Datejust or something that warrants close inspection.
What is the difference between the Day-Date and the Datejust?
The Day-Date shows the full day of the week as well as the date and is made only in precious metal. The Datejust shows the date alone and is available in steel, two-tone and gold. They share a visual language but sit in different parts of the catalog.
Does a diamond dial affect value?
Factory diamond dials and bezels are part of the Rolex catalog and are valued accordingly. Stones set outside the factory generally reduce value against an unmodified example, and identifying which is which is part of authentication.
