Five things, in roughly this order of weight.
- Reference number. Two watches from the same brand in the same metal can sit thousands apart on reference alone.
- Condition. Case sharpness above all. Polishing cannot be undone and a heavily refinished case reads immediately.
- Completeness. Box, papers, card, original bracelet, spare links, tags. The card matters most.
- Service history. Documented work from the manufacturer or a recognised watchmaker supports the figure.
- Current market. References move. A figure quoted last year is not a figure today.
