Watch authentication

Every watch Pinnacle Chrono sells is authenticated before it changes hands, and every watch bought in is authenticated before a figure is confirmed. Authentication here means physical examination against what the reference should carry, not a database lookup against a serial number. Independent dealer, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33334. Membership of Jewelers of America, the Jewelers Board of Trade and the IWJG.

What is actually checked

Element What it reveals
Case and lugs Whether the watch has been polished, and how heavily. Not reversible
Dial Printing quality, lume ageing, redialling. The most common point of failure
Hands Correct style for the reference, lume matching the dial
Movement Correct calibre for the reference, finishing, signs of non-original parts
Bracelet and clasp Codes consistent with the production period, stretch, replacement links
Bezel and crystal Original or service replacement, insert authenticity on vintage
Papers Whether the card, certificate and dates agree with the watch

Why a serial number check is not authentication

A serial number tells you a watch of that reference was produced in a given period. It tells you nothing about whether the watch in front of you is that watch. Serials are engraved on counterfeit cases routinely, and numbers taken from public listings have been used to make fakes appear legitimate.

This is also why serial numbers are worth protecting. Posting a clear photograph of an engraved serial on a forum or a public listing hands over the identifying detail of your watch. Send serials privately for valuations and blur them in public listings.

Where fakes fail

High-grade counterfeits have improved considerably, and the obvious tells of a decade ago are mostly gone. What still separates them is consistency. A convincing case with a slightly wrong dial font, correct hands with lume that ages differently from the markers, a genuine movement in a replica case, a replaced bezel insert on an otherwise honest watch.

The most frequent problem is not an outright fake, though. It is a genuine watch with non-original components that nobody mentioned: a service dial, replacement hands, a swapped bezel. Pinnacle Chrono states those explicitly rather than quietly, because they affect the value and the next buyer will find them.

What happens after authentication

Watches sold are serviced as required before they change hands, with condition and box-and-papers status stated per piece. Nothing is described as unworn unless the card and full set are present. Anything replaced or refinished is named in the description rather than left for the buyer to discover.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know a luxury watch is real?

By physical examination of the case, dial, hands, movement, bracelet and papers against what the reference should carry. A serial number check alone is not authentication, because serials are copied onto counterfeit cases.

Can a watch be genuine but still misdescribed?

Frequently. Service dials, replacement hands, swapped bezels and refinished cases all appear on genuine watches, and all reduce value. Whether they were disclosed is usually the real question.

Does Pinnacle Chrono authenticate watches bought elsewhere?

Send details of what you are considering and Pinnacle Chrono will give a view on the listing and what to check. For a formal assessment of a watch in hand, get in touch to discuss what is involved.

Should I post my serial number online?

No. Blur it in public listings and send it privately when getting valuations. Publicly posted serials have been used to build convincing counterfeits and false ownership claims.
